UNIT 3: HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS

UNIT 4: ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES

A&E DEPARTMENT ATTENDS VICTIMS OF:

- Road traffic accidents.
- Violent crimes.
- Accidents at home.
- Suicide attempts.
- Self-harming.
- Contact with toxic chemicals and radiation.
- Burns.
- Near drowning
- Hypothermia.
- Minor injuries: Sprains, cutgs and grazes.

A & E CONSIDERS AN EMERGENCY:

- Loss of consciousness.
- Heavy blood loss.
- Suspected broken bones.
- Chest pain lasting 15 minutes or more.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Overdose.
- Poisoning.

TRIAGE: In case of major incidents (terrorist attacks, large fires, multiple road traffic accidents) is to determine who is a priority and needs to be treated immediately and who can wait.
MEDICAL VOCABULARY: Bandages, a scalpel, morphine, aspirin, disposable gloves, thermometer, tweezers, a first aid manual, hypodermic needles, adhesive tape.
FIRST AID Vocabulary. First, second and third degree burns; blister and severe bleeding.

INSTRUCTIONS: Apply, check for, immobilize, immerse, keep, make sure, puncture, remove, squeeze, sterilize, swab, treat.

SHOCK

UNIT 14: MEDICATION

Vocabulary: Opioids, pills, capsules, patches, injection, laxative, antacids, beta blockers, anticoagulants.

TYPES AND FORMS OF MEDICATION: Painkiller, sedative, anti-inflammatory, inoculation, antibiotic, antihistamine, stimulant,antidepressant, laxative, supplement.

MEDICAL PROBLEMS: an infection, cut, an insect bite, constipation, obesity, vitamin deficiency, infectious disease, an allergy.

OTHER THINGS: Syringe, inhaler, ointment, capsules, IV drip, suppository, adhesive patch, tablespoon, dropper.
